Oh. My. God. Ohmygod. Ohmygod. Ohmygod.
Let’s get right to the important stuff: we call him ‘Sebie’ (like “See-Bee”), he is the absolute cutest, and now he’s found his forever home! Just look at that smile.
Things didn’t start easy. When my husband and I found Sebie, he looked to be in rough shape: he clearly hadn’t stopped a mom-and-pop countryside diner or had a scoop of Dave and Andy’s ice cream in months. We wanted to help so bad, trying everything to get him to walk back to the car with us, but he couldn’t bring himself to trust us that quickly.
We offered him a Starbucks coffee and he didn’t want anything to do with it. We tried a bottle of water, but he barely touched it. Then my husband had an idea that changed everything: a chili dog. He came around the corner with an all-beef frank, drenched in homemade chili, melted cheese, and diced onions, and you should have seen Sebie’s face light up.
He took a few bites and let me scratch his ear a bit. After the last bite, we knew everything was going to be OK when he smiled and spoke! Just the thought of this big fella saying, “Did you know the cobblestone on this road is repurposed from the Allegheny Water Authority building that had to be torn down due to an overnight fire in 1899 that, due to the long weekend, went undiscovered for four days?” will warm my heart forever.
Needless to say, when he came home with us, he snuggled up and has barely moved since. Too enamored with his belly rubs and these industrial-age caramel treats we got him, I suppose. His talents surprise us with each passing day: he’s a good listener, likes to go on walks, and can shoot entire documentaries about infrastructural relics of steel-era Pittsburgh on command…and he’s ours!
